What I seek in my design is to create rooms which are relaxed and inviting, casual but elegant and ones people feel free to use – not be intimidated by their formality.

I like, for example, big coffee tables which everyone can reach; they create a conversation area in the way that a dining table does. They are home for a bottle of wine, a pizza, and an intimate dance floor!

I appreciate furniture which you can live with, not precious but improving with age and use.

An interior decorator for 40 years I was an apprentice to Anita Bell of the well-known Brisbane furniture manufacturers, Bell Brothers. I later worked for Myer, Corso de Fiori and now La Verandah.

What I have seen change in the style of decoration in that time is a move away from formality to a more eclectic look – one of interesting pieces influenced by people’s far greater exposure to the wider world.
